Small Groups

In a small group, people study the Bible together and discuss the issues and challenges of life. They pray, care for one another, and are missed if they don’t show up. Friendships form. Small groups transform a large church into a small, intimate congregation. Small groups are organic in nature. That means they operate more as a family, with issues, time constraints, and changes constantly occurring in the lives of their members. Small groups are not a program, scheduled tightly around an academic setting or curriculum; instead, they are more a process of experiencing life together over time, in many settings, in all situations.

Sisters of Selah (SOS) – A Tuesday Evening Small Group for Women

Tuesdays 7 – 9 pm, in the Parlor of the Harris Activity Center, 530 Poyntz.

Looking for a small group where you can connect with others and grow in your faith? We invite women of all ages to join an evening small group for women, Sisters of Selah, for conversation and community.

This fall, we are working through a new bible study, Stepping Up: A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent, by Beth Moore. This in-depth women’s Bible study focuses on Psalms 120-134. As Moore explains, “Traveling pilgrims sang these psalms both on the way to the great festivals of the Lord and as key elements of the worship at those festivals. Just as a song or poem can express feelings of fear, doubt, hope, and joy, these 15 psalms model how we can voice our own petitions and praises to our God, who is always available and ready to hear us.” The study will examine the major feasts of Israel and include themes of unity, joy, gratitude, redemption, repentance, the power of blessings, facing ridicule, and more.

For more information, contact Jennifer Anthony (jennanthony@gmail.com or 626-590-3814). To register for the bible study, contact the church office (785-776-8821,fumc@fumcmanhattan.com). Let us know if you need us to order a copy of the book for you.

Childcare is available by calling 785-776-2422 at least 48 hours in advance.

Couples With Kids Small Groups

We have two couples’ small groups that meet weekly.  One meets Sunday evenings at 5, and the other meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30.  Our goals are to grow in our faith and to build community with one another.  During the months of September and October, we are doing the 6-week Bible study, “Five Things God Uses to Grow Your Faith,” by Andy Stanley.  Childcare is provided.  Both couples-with-kids groups are open to new members.

If you’d like to join, contact Pastor Andy at ahargrove@fumcmanhattan.com.
